Marc Jacobs lost his father at just seven years of age. The devastating news meant that Jacobs would grow up with his fashion-conscious grandmother. She taught him the ropes, and possibly laid the foundation for his career. When he was 18, he began his studies at the famous "Parsons The New School for Design." By the time he finished his studies in 1984, Jacobs had already won numerous awards. He joined Perry Ellis and was instantly hailed by the press as "Designer of the Year."
With business partner Robert Duffy, Marc Jacobs launched his first collection in 1986 and founded his own label. In 1997, he went to Paris and began working as creative director at Louis Vuitton – making it to his fashion haven. Jacobs brought new energy to the company, which had previously only existed as a luggage and accessories house. He simultaneously continued to establish his own label and became hugely successful. He is regarded as one of the hottest designers of his generation with stars including Natalie Portman, Selma Blair and Scarlett Johansson worshiping the cool New Yorker.
Marc Jacobs’ style is just as attractive as it is unconventional. He often skilfully combines contradictory elements into a larger whole, and has therefore long been regarded as a creative visionary of the fashion scene. Year after year, Marc Jacobs, with its trend-setting and unerring vision, accurately predicts what women want to wear.
Meanwhile, his designs are represented in more than 60 company-operated stores worldwide and his fashion collections are joined by fragrance lines, a watch line, two glasses collections and a children's range.
